Topic: Development of human health promoting fumigates from raw materials cultivated and available in rural areas for strengthening health security

Project Description:

In Nepalese Society, fumigation is practiced in homes of people as well in case of unregulated pest infestation or at times when people require their residence to be clean of microbes. Fumigation holds a religious and cultural significance in Nepalese communities. In Ayurveda and Traditional Medicine, fumigation procedure with natural plant products is mentioned that includes burning plant products in rituals (yagnas or havan), which in turn disinfects surfaces and makes the environment aseptic. We aim to develop human health-promoting fumigates from raw materials available and cultivated in rural areas, and promote the health security of rural communities. This project involves stepwise methods of collection and quality control of herbs from rural areas followed by optimization of production of fumigates and standardization of the products (quality and toxicology assessment from analytical laboratories). The formulation developed will abide with national quality standards for implementation with convenience for end consumers. This Project expects Scioio – Economic impacts by the utilization of local resources from rural areas and their processing. increase in Gross Domestic Production of the areas and quality of life and health

Objectives:

  1. To conduct observational studies of recent fumigation practices, types of fumigation products, their utility, and efficiency.
  2. To conduct surveys for availability of raw materials in rural areas and develop a year[1]round supply chain through capacity building of rural communities and farmers via workshops and training.
  3. Obtaining approval and collaboration from local governmental agencies as well as community level registered bodies for production and marketing of fumigates.
  4. To employ modern technologies in development and optimization of fumigates of natural origin in the form of Incense stick, Fumigating Cones, and Antimicrobial Herbal Room Spray.
  5. To conduct toxicology tests and quality control of the produced products from laboratories abiding with the national and international standards.
  6. To conduct observational trials of products and collect consumer response with regard to efficiency, convenience and compliance with existing practices.
  7. To produce research journals for communicating the development with scientific communities.
  8. To produce fumigates in mass scale and manage turnover cycle through advertisements, media and collaboration with research, academic and medical institutes.
  9. To determine the market via surveillance of the market response regarding products and evaluate further market values

Expected outcomes:

The project is based on utilization of local resources from rural areas and their processing to a value-added human health promoting product. Thus, it will leave a sustainable social and economic impact along with promoting the quality of life of rural people.

Rural Development: Participation of communities from rural areas in the project will generate employment on a short- and long-term basis. Moreover, focused commercial farming as well as rise in production of herbal medicinal plants will also commit to agricultural promotion. Alignment of projects to SDGs and current values of development is expected to create multiplier and long-term impacts.

Health Related Livelihood: The major outcome of the project will be human health promoting fumigates. The products will be convenient to use in the form of spray, cones and fumigating sticks. These wide range of products with quality assurance in an expanding market of fumigates are expected to generate a profit yielding business model.
